Ancient Roman Homes

For this week’s history essay, I chose to write about Roman homes. I will talk about both rich homes and poorer homes, who lived in them and their quality. Also, a little bit about the durability of the home.

I will start with poorer homes. These homes were poorly made apartments, and they were for the poorer people in Rome. They were very dark, dirty, and crowded. These apartments were usually made of wood, so they could easily catch fire and spread very quickly. Because of this, all cooking with fire was forbidden in these apartments.

These and even the middle-class apartments did not have bathrooms. You would have to go to a public bathroom. These were very public. It was basically just a line of holes in the ground with no walls or anything. They also did not have kitchens.

The very wealthy people could live in a townhome. This was a big, luxurious home with a garden, courtyard, and multiple rooms. However, these homes did not have any decorations and they were bland. Although they are nice, townhomes did not have bathrooms either.

However, the very wealthy people who owned the townhomes also owned beautiful summer villas. They looked just like townhomes, but bigger and decorated. These villas were surrounded by gorgeous farmlands too.

Altogether, these are the houses that Romans used to have. Some of them were better than others depending on how much money the family or person had. I am so excited to learn more about family and daily life in Rome next week.
