Fashion and Clothing in Ancient Rome
For this week’s writing assignment, I am going to write about fashion and clothing in ancient Rome. This means what they would wear. I will also talk about bathhouses in Rome.
Fashion was very important in Rome; therefore, people would spend lots of time and money on how they looked. They would dress according to the style. The style was whatever the emperor and his wife were wearing, except the emperor’s clothes were much nicer.
Men would often wear loincloths under their tunics and other garments. They would have a wool or cotton sheet tied together in places and a belt around the waist.
Women would also wear a tunic, but it was hidden by what was kind of like a dress. They also had something kind of like a veil covering the top of their head when they went outside their house. This was called a palla.
The bathhouses could only be used by men when they were first made, but later, women were allowed to use them too. You also had to pay to bathe in the bathhouses. It was free for children, who went at whatever time their gender did, cheap for men, who went in the afternoon, and very expensive for women, who went in the morning.
They also had very public bathrooms in the bathhouses. There was a library, a garden, athletics and exercise room, and more for people to relax, workout, talk, clean, etc.
As you can see, these are the things people in Rome used to wear. I also talked about bathhouses and what was in them. The Romans had a somewhat okay way of public bathrooms for their time, but thank goodness we have what we do now.
